Those of you that know us, know we live in a very small town in the Midwest. We are surrounded by corn fields and pretty much nothing else. Well when something happens in Mascoutah, its exciting. I am going to try and make a long story short if thats possible.
Friday after school I got a call from my good friend Melissa she called to tell me she had just gotten off the phone with Mr. Blakley our VP at our kids middle school. She had called him because Megan came home and told her she got TWO after school detentions for hugging two of her friends on their way to the bus. She was so mad, as I would be too, how stupid a reason to give detention. You would think there are bigger things to worry about than 2 kids say goodbye to each other after school. Our school is very fond of giving out detentions, especially in the 8th grade. I work at the school and see the kids that get detentions and its ridiculous! Anyway back to the story, Melissa told the VP Megan would not be serving those detentions. He said he would talk to Mr. Stone about this the Principal. She hung up and called Dr. McGowan the Super of the school district. He never returned her call. She was so upset about it all that she decided to call all the news stations in the St. Louis area. Monday she called me to tell me that they all called her and were coming to interview her. So sure enough here comes Fox, ABC, and NBC. They interviewed her at her home (and her husband). While one of the channels was there she finally got a call from the Super (only because the news channels were calling him wanting comments which he refused to give, as did the principal at the Middle School) and he said that if Megan didn't serve the after schools she would get in school suspension and if she didn't serve those she would get out of school suspension. Which would mean all zeros in her classes. Melissa couldn't let Megan do that so she served the detentions. Or she is she served one last night and will serve one today. The news channels set up across the street from the school and captured Melissa picking up Megan from detention, as well as interviewing kids after they left school that day. Thats where the exciting part comes in for us. :-) I was not home yet from shopping so Kristopher had to walk home. Well he was walking with a bunch of his friends and the reporter stopped them and interviewed some of them. Kristopher was the only one they showed on camera of him and his friends. They also showed a few girl friends of his, and the girl that Megan hugged. The clip is below if you would like to watch it.
After all the news channels called the radio stations started calling Melissa, the major news paper in the next town over is doing a front page story on it and GOOD MORNING AMERICA called and interviewed your Megan on the phone. Not sure when and if it will be on there but I have it recording just in case!! :-)
So thats the exciting new of our big town!!! LOL

That is sooo crappy they gave her a detention for hugging her friend. Now was this friend a girl? Although to just give a detention for hugging a guy (which they definitely will do) is kind of sexist. I remember those PDA detentions.
WOW! That is just crazy. So what happens if a parent hugs their child before they go into school?? Is that not allowed either. Now days I can't imagine not hugging my child. School can be a scary place these days. For Goodness sakes. just the craziest thing I have heard in quite some time
